duplications suggest a mechanism for the colinearity of Hoxd genes in limbs. Current Biology Vol 15 No 20 R822 Figure 2. Maintenance of ParaHox clusters. Schematic of the amphioxus ParaHox cluster (top), with flanking genes, and the mam-malian ParaHox clusters with the mammalian ParaHox paralogy regions. The amphioxus cluster has retained the organisation present in the chordate ancestor. Arrows denote transcriptional orientation, which has been conserved between the ParaHox clusters and the paralogy regions. The pattern of gene linkage and orientation indicates that the mam-malian genomic regions arose from duplications of the entire region, followed by extensive gene loss (indicated by 'X'). Only a single intact ParaHox cluster remains in mammals, and genomic rearrangements have occurred up to its edges, but not within it. Each column of receptor tyrosine kinase genes (yellow) is a distinct paralogy group (i.e. PDGFRA is a paralogue of PDGFRB). FLT4 has been transposed to a different location on the chromosome, and the orientation of FLT3 is the reverse of that of its par-alogues KIT and CSF1R, the orientation of KIT and CSF1R presumably being the same as the ancestral organisation. AmphiSCP1 is reduced to indicate the possibility that it is a retrotransposition (see Supplemental Data). Mammalian PAN3 is reduced because it is not a receptor tyrosine kinase gene and hence is not analysed here.

5-HT3 antagonist for cognition improvement in schizophrenia: a double blind, placebo-controlled trial

Introduction: Patients with schizophrenia characteristically exhibit cognitive deficits. The level of cognitive impairment is found to predict the functional outcome of the illness more strongly than the severity of positive or negative symptoms. The purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy of ondansetron, a 5-HT3 receptor antagonist as an adjuvant agent in the treatment of chronic...

Reduced contextual effects on visual contrast perception in schizophrenia and bipolar affective disorder.

BACKGROUND The salience of a visual stimulus is often reduced by nearby stimuli, an effect known as surround suppression of perceived contrast, which may help in locating the borders of an object. Weaker surround suppression has been observed in schizophrenia but it is unclear whether this abnormality is present in other mental disorders with similar symptomatology, or is evident in people with...

Abnormal Contextual Modulation of Visual Contour Detection in Patients with Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia patients demonstrate perceptual deficits consistent with broad dysfunction in visual context processing. These include poor integration of segments forming visual contours, and reduced visual contrast effects (e.g. weaker orientation-dependent surround suppression, ODSS). Background image context can influence contour perception, as stimuli near the contour affect detection accura...

Neurobiology of Disease Weakened Center-Surround Interactions in Visual Motion Processing in Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is often accompanied by a range of visual perception deficits, with many involving impairments in motion perception. The presence of perceptual abnormalities may impair neural processes that depend on normal visual analysis, which in turn may affect overall functioning in dynamic visual environments. Here, we examine the integrity of suppressive center-surround mechanisms in motio...

Diminished orientation-specific surround suppression of visual processing in schizophrenia.

Visual perception of a stimulus is a function of the visual context in which it is displayed. Surround suppression is a specific form of contextual modulation whereby the perceived contrast of a center stimulus is decreased by a high-contrast surround. Recent studies have demonstrated that individuals with schizophrenia are less prone to visual contextual effects, suggesting impairments in cort...
